Transparency of 0.2% GdCl3 Doped Water in a Stainless Steel Test Environment

چکیده
The possibility of neutron and neutrino detection using water Cerenkov detectors doped with gadolinium holds the promise of constructing very large high-efficiency detectors with wide-ranging application in basic science and national security. This study addresses a major concern regarding the feasibility of such detectors: the transparency of the doped water to the ultraviolet Cerenkov light. We report on experiments conducted using a 19-meter water transparency measuring instrument and associated materials test tank. Sensitive measurements of the transparency of water doped with 0.2% GdCl3 at 337nm, 400nm and 420nm were made using this instrument. These measurements indicate that the use of GdCl3 in stainless steel constructed water Cerenkov detectors is problematic.

متن کاملCorrosion Fatigue of 17-4pH Stainless Steel in a Simulated Sea Water Solution
Since martensitic precipitation hardened 17-4pH stainless steel has been widely used in corrosive environments, evaluation of its corrosion fatigue behavior is important. In this research, after microstructural studies, mechanical, corrosion, fatigue and corrosion fatigue tests were performed on 17-4pH specimens. Fatigue and corrosion fatigue tests were carried out at the stress ratio of -1 an...

متن کامل2686: Investigation of Stress Corrosion Cracking Susceptibility of High Strength Stainless Steels for Use as Strand Material in Prestressed Concrete Construction in a Marine Environment
Stainless steel reinforcing has an elevated chloride threshold and is an attractive alternative for prestressed concrete applications. However, due to the high strength requirements for prestressing strands, concern exists about the possibility of stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This investigation screened for potential SCC development three candidate high strength alloys for use as prestresse...
متن کاملAssessing the Cleanability of Stainless Steel Surfaces – Development of a Testing Method for Starch and Protein Based Soils
To measure the cleanability of stainless steel surfaces under standardized conditions, a test stand was set up. Three stainless steel plates (size 200 x 100 mm) can be fixed to the test stand and sprayed with a water jet from a low-pressure nozzle for a period of several minutes. The plates were previously soiled with a starch or protein film with a pre-defined layer thickness and dried for sev...
